Abstract

On 28 September 2022, the European Commission presented a proposal to amend Directive 2009/148/EC concerning
the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to asbestos at work, announcing a series of actions for 2022
and 2023. The main change proposed relates to the modification of the occupational exposure limit value (OELV) for
asbestos. The proposed change plans to lower the by an order of magnitude the current OELV (from 0.1 fibres/cm3 to
0.01 fibres/cm3 - determined as an 8-hour time-weighted average). The proposal also addresses some aspects directly
connected to the lowering of the current occupational exposure limit, such as those relating to exposure measurement
techniques.
